Low Voltage Directive

lvd.jpgTÜV SÜD Product Service is a Notified Body for the Low Voltage Directive. The Low Voltage Directive involves conformity assessment procedures and Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSRs) which products must meet directly or by means of harmonised standards before being placed on the European market.

The Low Voltage Directive ensures that electrical equipment within certain voltage limits provides high level of protection for European citizens and a single market in the European Union. The Directive covers electrical equipment with a voltage between 50 and 1000 V for alternating current and between 75 and 1500 V for direct current. These voltage ratings refer to the voltage of the electrical input or output, not to voltages that may appear inside the equipment. For electrical equipment within its scope, the Directive covers all health and safety risks, thus ensuring that electrical equipment is safe in its intended use.

The manufacturer, or their authorised representative in the EU, should declare compliance of the product to the requirements of the applicable directives before placing the CE mark on it and, in so doing, takes legal responsibility for the product. It is therefore important to have some documentary evidence of having interpreted the requirements of the relevant directives and evidence of testing to demonstrate conformity with these requirements.

TÜV Product Service offers a range of services to assist manufacturers or their agents in CE Marking products that they are placing on the EU market:

  • Electrical safety testing assessments and report
  • Notified Body opinions and reports
  • Advice on which EC Directives apply to your product
  • Advice on Declarations of Conformity and application of CE marking to your product
  • Interpretation of EC Directive requirements

The CE marking process is often relatively simple, but requires an interpretation of the requirements of the directives applicable to the product to be marked.
