CTIA Battery Certification Program
CTIA Authorised Testing Laboratory (CATL)
The CTIA – The Wireless Association, working in partnership with leading cellular network operators, have devised a scheme that helps battery cell / pack and end product manufacturers raise safety and quality levels.
CTIA Battery Certification is becoming increasingly necessary to satisfy US network operators that your cellular product system is safe. Without certification you may find that the network operators refuse to accept your products.
TÜV SÜD are appointed by the CTIA as a CTIA Authorised Testing Laboratory (CATL), and we can therefore obtain CTIA Battery Certification on your behalf via our two dedicated laboratories based in Asia and Europe.
We have an established and proven track record in the certification and testing of cellular products. Our specialist team of auditors and consultants are leading experts in the battery industry and specialise in Li-Ion and Li-Ion Polymer technologies. In addition to providing certification services, we also carry out all testing and auditing that is necessary to satisfy CTIA Battery Certification requirements.
The aim of the CTIA programme is to verify compliance of cellular products in accordance with the standard IEEE 1725 ‘Standard for Rechargeable Batteries for Cellular Telephones’ or IEEE1625 ‘ Standard for Rechargeable Batteries for Multi-cell Mobile Computing Devices” and associated CTIA documents. This relates to the complete cellular product system (cell, battery pack, external back-up battery pack, cellular product (host), power adapter and / or charging cradle) and its interaction. The programme is a system-level certification scheme encompassing recognition of subsystems such as battery packs and adapters and certification of complete cellular product systems utilising recognised subsystems.
In the context of the CTIA Battery Certification programme cellular products covers a variety of portable products that feature cellular functionality including mobile/cellular phones, laptop /netbook computers, tablets, e-book readers and data capture and identification products.
The criterion for selecting certification to either IEEE1725 or 1625 is dependent on the cell configuration within the battery pack; products powered by single cell or parallel only connected cells are certified against IEEE1725 where as products powered by battery packs with multiple series cells or combination of series and parallel cells are certified against IEEE1625.
