TÜV Product Service becomes a BRC approved Certification Body

TÜV Product Service has been registered as a Certification Body under the BRC Global Standard for Consumer Products.

The BRC scheme is based on a series of Global standards which aim to ensure that retailers can meet their legal requirements and protect the value of their brands, whilst keeping consumers safe.

Almost all consumer products are covered by the BRC Global standard for consumer products, which was initially developed in response to European safety requirements for Consumer Goods covered by the General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC. BRC was asked to set up the scheme by retailers to reduce the number of supplier audits, remove the competitive element from product safety, and provide a baseline measure that would assist retailers to demonstrate “due diligence”.

The new service offered by TÜV Product Service through its certification body, BABT, will involve supplier audits to evaluate risks and hazards relating to safety and quality. The audits will cover Product Risk Management, Consumer Product Management Systems, Site Standards, Product and Process control, Training and Hygiene procedures.

Retailers that have already accepted BRC’s standard for consumer products include
Asda, B&Q, The Co-operative, Argos, Homebase, John Lewis and J Sainsbury.
