First Remote Access Test Facility Launched

TÜV Product Service, an expert on product testing and certification, is launching the UK’s first product testing remote monitoring service.

The new ‘Remote Monitoring Service’ means that TÜV Product Service’s customers will be able to significantly reduce costs traditionally associated with testing, such as environmental simulation and EMC immunity and emissions testing, and reduce time to market for new products.

The system uses a high definition camera which the user can control from their own office via their desktop to zoom in and out and direct it to any points of interest within the test facility. They can also access test statistics in real time to monitor the product’s test performance, as if they were at TÜV’s premises.

Quake Global, a leading manufacturer of satellite communicators based in California, has worked with TÜV Product Service in a pilot to test the new Remote Monitoring Service. Sergio Ramos, Quake’s Chief Technical Officer, said: “There is great value in a service such as this, whether you are UK-based or an international company.

“Tests can take up a lot of valuable time for our engineering staff, who often need to be on site during testing. By using TÜV’s Remote Monitoring Service, Quake Global can not only save on travel costs and man-hours, we can also focus our staff on more productive activities within our business. As TÜV is the only company to offer such a service, we will be working with them on many more testing projects,” concluded Ramos.

A key benefit of the new service is that if any problems do arise during the test, the customer does not have to travel to the TÜV facility to rectify them. They can simply log on to the Remote Monitoring Service via a highly secure network and speak directly with the TÜV engineer running the test. The customer can then review the statistics and control the camera to work with the test engineer to adjust the test level and re-start activity.

For many users of the service, costs will be further reduced as they will not have to attend the initial test set-up, because the TÜV engineer can set up the test under the customer’s guidance via the remote link. For more complex equipment, fewer staff from the customer will be required at the TÜV facility to support the set-up phase.

Jean-Louis Evans, Managing Director of TÜV Product Service commented: “Product testing can prove extremely time-consuming. That is why we are focused on developing innovative services for our customers to help them run their compliance programmes more effectively. Now the pilot phase is completed, I hope that more customers will realise the benefits of this unique service in reducing both travel and management time, whilst delivering the same end result.”
