Business Manager – ADI EMC

What does that involve?
I manage the Aerospace, Defence & Industrial EMC sectors of the business which includes sites at Fareham and Stratford Upon Avon. On a day to day basis my role can include dealing with personnel issues, forming business strategy, financial decision making and customer liaison.

What knowledge and skills do you need to do your job?
You need to understand the technology and field of EMC to be able to provide guidance to the engineers and customers. A good commercial awareness and an understanding of what is going on in the market is crucial for basing business decisions on. Good communication and organizational skills are needed to ensure that the business is running at optimum with everyone knowing what needs to be achieved. A calm and reflective nature is needed as the plan of work is constantly changing which could create chaos if priorities are not redefined.

What aspects of your role do you find the most rewarding?
People always present a challenge! Industry is going through a period of change and we are all striving for continuous improvement and doing things quicker and easier. I enjoy working with my team to achieve easier ways to conduct work and improve our profits. All these initiatives impact on our service delivery and when a customer leaves site satisfied and then returns for further work it is a sign that we are getting things right.

How has your career developed with the Company?
I started as an EMC engineer, but found that I enjoyed the interaction with customers and problem solving on their projects. My organization skills meant I was more suited to a project role and the company enabled me to combine testing with project management to utilize these skills. Now I look after the operation of the whole ADI EMC business which keeps me on my toes. I have a variety of tasks which include financial responsibility, proposing business strategy and most importantly developing staff potential.
