Compliance to several Directives and Legislation within the EU and North America is becoming increasingly necessary to enable machinery to be categorised as safe prior to installation and use.

The European Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC) provides the regulatory basis for the essential health and safety requirements for both machinery and associated safety components. Essentially performing a dual function, the Directive not only promotes the free movement of machinery and safety components within the Single Market, but also helps to guarantee a high level of protection to EU workers.

Broadly the Directive splits the machinery and safety components into two categories. Low risk items [ PDF 415 kB ] follow 5 main steps to ensure the machinery and associated safety components comply with this Directive through the CE marking process. High risk items from Annex IV [ PDF 415 kB ] of the Directive follow a more complex process to ensure the extra risks are assessed and may require the intervention of a Notified Body.

The scope of the European Machinery Directive intentionally overlaps with several other Directives and Legislation due to their intricate nature. Establishing which Directives apply to your machinery can be confusing and we can help you to navigate the pitfalls of each Directive to ensure relevance.
