TÜV SÜD supplies testing, consultancy and Notified Body services to enable manufacturers of new and refurbished trains to demonstrate compliance with legal and contractual requirements.

TÜV SÜD can manage the approval process for all relevant international cross acceptance requirements and has unmatched experience in the assessment of Automatic Train Protection (ATP) systems as well as fire prevention and fighting techniques.

The safe operation of trains within the rail network is critical to passengers and rail operatives. There are many elements that go into making sure that hazards and risks associated with rail vehicles are minimised and this includes electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Poor EMC management and control can result in operational problems and in extreme cases can have a direct effect on the safety of a rail vehicle.

Rolling stock tends to have unique power supply characteristics and low frequency emissions can interfere with signalling. Furthermore, modern rolling stock uses a wealth of communication and control electronics which must perform reliably and safely. Much of this new technology is tried and tested and available as commercial off the shelf (COTS) equipment. The drive to use COTS equipment is based on functional performance and price but typically at the expense of a lower EMC performance than that specified for rail use.

TÜV SÜD has been involved with a number of successful major rolling stock projects including the Javelin high-speed shuttle trains for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link – Domestic Services (CTRL-DS) and new trains for London Underground’s Victoria Line upgrade.

We understand the many and conflicting requirements associated with successful integration of complex equipments within trains. Our approach to EMC compliance involves a combination of testing complemented with a robust technical argument and analysis.

Our EMC Notified Body assessment and Statement of Compliance provides an additional level of EMC assurance to train operators and owners.

We also have experience of working on unique rolling stock refurbishment programs such as the Network Rail New Measurement Train, EWS Company Train and various automated track monitoring systems.

TÜV SÜD also offers 3 fire protection services; investigation, testing (including consultancy) and railway vehicle safety planning.

In addition to testing rolling stock, TÜV SÜD provides a full range of testing, certification, consulting and training and has considerable rail industry experience in:
