REACh
REACh – implications for product manufacturers, importers and retailers
REACh stands for Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals. The EU regulation came into force on 1st June 2007 with the sole aim of placing greater responsibility on industry to protect human health and the environment.
There are over 30,000 chemicals in use today in every day household products. Under REACh these chemicals are required to be registered in a central database administered by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). REACh identifies risk management measures for companies which use chemicals and advises best practice to ensure their safe use.

What is it applicable to?
The REACh regulations are applicable to substances, preparations (mixtures of chemicals) and articles (finished products).
Your legal obligations under REACh depend on the role your business has within the supply chain. As a business you have a responsibility to know, control and be able to trace the origins of the chemicals that are found in your products.
We offer customised consultancy solutions to advise and guide you through all aspects of your obligations under REACh.
Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC)
SVHCs are defined in Article 57 of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 and include substances that are:
- Carcinogenic, Mutagenic or Toxic to Reproduction
- Persistent, Bio-accumulative and Toxic
- Chemicals scientifically identified as causing probable serious effects to human health or to the environment
It is imperative that you as a product manufacturer, importer or retailer know that SVHCs are not used in any of your products above the maximum quantities specified.
The only way to be certain that you are compliant with this legislation is to implement a robust supply chain management system involving:
- New supplier assessments
- Ongoing supplier audits
- Collation and review of supplier documentation and declarations
- Spot check chemical testing
