Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields
Exposure to unsafe levels of electrogmagnetic fields (EMF) can cause a rise in body temperature, burns, shocks and other adverse conditions. EMF can also affect people indirectly if they wear implantable electronic devices such as heart pacemakers.
In order to prevent people from being exposed to hazardous electromagnetic fields, exposure restrictions have been placed on EMF quantities such as electric field strength, magnetic field strength, magnetic flux density, power density and contact current. These EMF levels can be measured and actual risk of exposure assessed.
TÜV Product Service undertakes EMF measurements, surveys and assessments for a wide range of environments and products including household appliances, radio transmitting devices, cellular radio base stations, machinery using radio frequency power, hospital diathermy equipment and radar, broadcast, navigation and communications transmitter installations.
We can address the requirements of guidance documents and standards including: NRPB Volume 15 No. 2, ICNIRP, IEEE/ANSI C95.1, EN 503xx series, Physical Agents Directive EMF 2004/40/EC, R&TTE Directive 99/5/EEC, Machinery Directive 98/37/EC, JSP 375 Leaflet 22.
We also offer a 2-day training course on RF and Microwave Radiation Safety and measurement and assessment solutions to enable employers to discharge their health and safety duties regarding EMF risk.
Direct measurement of the radio frequency energy coupled into the body can be made for devices used, on or around the body such as mobile telephones, for which we operate as a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) test laboratory. We also operate an UKAS accredited in-situ test team.
Certain electrical products must be tested to European standards on EMF in order to gain CE Marking.
