Packaging Testing

TÜV Product Service provides technical consultancy and testing services for suppliers of packaging for the Defence Industry. This service evaluates the performance of packaging, and the level of protection it provides to products while they are in transit or storage.

As part of our testing programmes, we can determine a product’s fragility so that an appropriate level of packaging protection can be used. In addition to reducing the risk of damage to goods in transit, we can also advise on whether cost savings can be made by removing unnecessary packaging.

In addition to being a UKAS accredited laboratory, we are accredited by ISTA to advise and certify that packaging complies with the latest ISTA specifications. We also demonstrate compliance with the defence packaging requirements issued by MoD.

We have a unique set of facilities designed to test the robustness and fragility of packaged samples and their packaging. The laboratory area comprises shock and vibration machines, a compression load machine, a side impact and precision drop test machine. Some of the machines are the largest in Europe in terms of size and payload capacity.

We offer a full range of services for packaging testing that replicates the mechanical and climatic conditions that products may encounter during transportation and storage. These include:

Mechanical tests

  • Transport vibration on a floor level hydraulic shaker with payloads up to 2 Tonnes (Floor level machines are used when possible to reduce set up time.)
  • Shock testing up to 600g or 70msec on payloads up to 2 Tonnes
  • Drop testing up to 8m
  • Bump and bounce testing
  • Compression testing to simulate pallets stacked one on top of another. Equivalent stacking weight is 15 Tonnes (largest in Europe)
  • Dynamic vehicle stacking test.

Climatic tests

  • Temperature testing, ranging from –65ºC to + 120ºC with humidity. This includes temperature dwells and cyclic programmes. Chamber sizes available up to 120 cubic metres with 4m doors and floor level access.

In addition to packaging testing, TÜV Product Service provides a full range of testing, certification, consulting and training solutions with specific defence experience in:
