TÜV SÜD extends test capacity for CTIA Battery Certification
In response to client demand in Europe and North America, TÜV SÜD has applied for and achieved accreditation from the CTIA (Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association) for the testing of battery charging systems of cellular devices at its European state of the art test laboratory in the UK. This new service complements TÜV SÜD’s existing accredited test service located in its facility in Singapore.
TÜV SÜD is an established body in the CTIA accreditation programme, and is one of only two organisations in Europe to be accredited by the CTIA. This offers European manufacturers a regional partner to expedite their products’ CTIA Battery Certification with a company that has a global reputation for quality assurance.
The CTIA bases its Battery Certification scheme around the IEEE 1725 standard, whilst working in partnership with cellular network operators to enable battery pack and handset manufacturers to raise safety and quality levels. This became a necessity following a number of incidents involving Li-Ion and Li-Ion Polymer batteries.
CTIA Battery Certification is of particular interest to manufacturers that have products with a cellular function, including sub-system manufacturers, who need access to the American market in order to supply the cellular mobile device industry. The types of products that require this certification are battery cells, battery packs, cellular products, power adapters (ac & dc), charging cradles and external battery backup packs. It is rapidly becoming an industry requirement to certify the safety of complete cellular systems and sub-systems under this scheme, in order to be able to sell a mobile cellular device to an American Network provider. Several leading American network operators now make it a mandatory requirement before accepting a product.
