AIS testing and certification

AIS testingAutomatic Identification System (AIS) is a short range VHF tracking system that is used on ships and leisure craft for identifying and locating vessels automatically by exchanging electronic data with other nearby vessels and traffic stations. AIS information supplements, but does not replace, marine radar, which continues to be the primary method of collision avoidance for water transport.

Having recently taken delivery of a new Protocol tester, we are now able to offer a complete test and certification service for AIS devices, including Class A and Class B.  This includes all RF, Protocol, EMC and Environmental testing.

Class A devices are used on SOLAS vessels and fall within the scope of the Marine Equipment Directive (MED).  To complement our test service, our Notified Body, TÜV SÜD BABT, provides certification of these devices under the MED.  As part of the certification process, we also provide the US Coastguard approval number as this is covered under a USA-EU Mutual Recognition Agreement.  For use in the USA, FCC certification to Part 80 is additionally required as these devices are intentional radiators.  TÜV SÜD BABT also provides this certification under their appointment as a TCB (Telecommunications Certification Body).

Class B devices are for use on non-SOLAS vessels (leisure market) and fall within the scope of the European Union’s R&TTE Directive.  The test standard IEC62287-1 is applicable for European, US and Canadian use. Again we provide a full test and certification service for these regions.
